Quiet pattern ahead, rain and mountain snow likely late in the weekend

The last few days of February 2025 will be dry and mild as temperatures reach the 60s each of the next few days. Look for plenty of sunshine and light winds as well. If you have had that feeling of being locked in the past few days due to the rainy and windy weather, no is the time to get outside and enjoy Central Oregon.

There is a ridge of high pressure that will stay in place over the next few days keeping the clouds away and the milder conditions in place. This ridge will act as a blocking force that will force everything moving into the area away. Think of it as a big bubble of air overhead that will not allow much to get into Central Oregon. A phrase used by many meteorologists is “big bubble, no trouble” and that applies in this case.

The bubble begins to break down over the weekend and will allow for some clouds to arrive Saturday ahead of some rain and mountain snow Sunday. The amount of snow and rain Sunday looks to be low, but it will add to the already impressive base numbers along the spine of the Cascades.

Friday is also the last day of the meteorological winter and the beginning of the meteorological spring. The meteorological winter is defined by the three coldest months of the year and is used for accurate climatological data collecting as it is a set period of time.  The Astronomical seasons are defined by the relationship between the earth and the sun. Solstices and equinoxes are the defining periods of these seasons. This month the Vernal Equinox or the beginning of the astronomical spring is on the 20th of March.

This meteorological spring will begin on a mild note, coming in like a lamb, not a lion. There is a proverb, “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb” which is the result of the climatological patterns during the month of March. The transition from winter to spring often brings windy and wild weather to most areas of the country. Rowdy weather patterns to close out the winter season and mild ones to start spring.  No real meteorological value, much like the groundhog, but still fun to keep track of. Looks like it will be a lamb to start the season this year.

Please stay safe.
