Butte Creek fire reaches 3000 acres in Wheeler and Gilliam County

Update: Adding additional information and corrections

CLARNO, Ore. (KTVZ) - At 2:30 PM on Sunday a wildfire began nine miles north of Clarno Oregon in the jurisdiction of Wheeler county. The fire quickly grew to 350 acres after early reports. Wheeler County Fire and Rescue along with teams from nearby Wasco and Gilliam County Fire and Rescue are currently dispatched to work the fire. The wildfire consists of grass, brush and scattered timber.

As of Tuesday Morning May 27th, the fire has grown to more than 3000 acres and crossed from Wheeler county into Gilliam County across the John Day river.

Crews are currently working to protect several privately owned and and BLM structures from the growing fire. No evacuation orders have been issued at this time and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Individuals nearby have been encouraged to be mindful of nearby tankers pulling water from the John Day river to suppress the fire.

As of the latest updates on Tuesday May 27th at 8:05 AM the fire is currently 0% contained.
