Warm and dry today, meteorological summer begins Sunday
Today will be, once again, above normal as the ridge of high pressure maintains a grip on the Pacific Northwest. High temperatures will be in the middle 80s under mostly sunny skies. Saturday will also be breezy with winds arriving from the northwest. This is due to a cooler pattern that is knocking on the door and will arrive on Sunday.
Sunday will be dry and breezy as well, but much cooler. Highs on Sunday will only reach the low 70s. The normal high temperature for the region on June 1st is 70 so we should be on point as far as temperatures go.
Sunday is also the first day of the Meteorological Summer, which runs from June to August. These are the three warmest months of the year and help maintain much more accurate records due to the consistent nature of the time frame. The Astronomical Summer begins on the Summer Solstice, when the direct rays of the sun are over the Tropic of Cancer. This will occur on June 20th this year at 7:41 local time. This is also the longest day of the year with respect to daylight. We are expected to have 15:29:40 hours of daylight, or about 15 and a half hours of sunshine.
Of note, we hit 91 on Friday, which was the first time we hit that mark this early season. The last time we hit 90 was September 28th last year. The earliest we ever made it to 90 was way back in 1904 on April 30th.
Next week looks rather quiet with highs in the middle 70s and mostly sunny skies.
