Hot temperatures and a chance for thunderstorms
We’re starting the week hot! Highs today are expected to top out in the 90s, which is about 15 degrees above normal for this time of year. Tomorrow, temperatures will stay in the 90s.
There is a heat advisory out for areas to our north, through the Columbia Basin. Although we aren’t included in the advisory, we will still be experiencing hot temperatures. It’s important to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks, and dress accordingly for the heat to stay safe. Little relief is expected overnight for some as lows only drop into the 50s and 60s.
This afternoon, Southern Oregon will see potentially strong thunderstorms. Storms should mostly dissipate before traveling north into Central Oregon but scattered showers and a slim chance for a rumble of thunder tonight are possible.
Tomorrow afternoon, storm chances return for Deschutes and Crook County. Although Jefferson county isn’t entirely in the clear, chances for storms drop as you travel further north.
Starting Tuesday afternoon, storms will travel south to north as a low pressure system spins off the California Coast, bringing moisture and instability to portions of our state from the south. Thunderstorms could bring lightning, gusty winds, small hail, and brief downpours.
We have issued a Local Alert Weather Day for Tuesday due to the chance for storms. The Storm Prediction Center has placed Central Oregon under a general risk for thunderstorms for both today and tomorrow, but chances today are slim and will be very late tonight, if at all; We have better chances Tuesday. Southern Oregon will experience stronger storms today and the SPC has placed areas to our south at a Marginal (level 1/5) risk for severe storms.
Happy Monday and have a great day. Stay safe from the heat!
