Spotty storms today, dry and hot pattern heading into the weekend

BEND, Ore (KTVZ).  Isolated storms are likely to develop today and generate periods of heavy rain along with the lightning. These pop and drop storms are very difficult to pinpoint so if you are out and about, keep an eye to the sky. If you hear the rumble of thunder, get to safety immediately.  The downbursts with the storms may also cause some minor flooding. Mountain locations may see some quick water flows and possibly some flash flooding.  If you are hiking or biking in the mountains, stay alert, the storm could be miles from you, and the mountains will channel the water to your location.

As for the rest of the week, we will be on the dry and hot side with temperature readings in the upper 80s and low 90s. The chance for a pop-up storm is possible, but not all that likely.  Just be alert, as we always need to be here in the mountains.

Friday we hit the 90s again as warm air migrates in from the southwest.  There is also a large wildfire along the Lane and Douglas County line that may give us some smoky skies. The Emigrant Fire is currently around 8,000 acres and burning timber and the left-over ground liter.  This may be a very smoky fire.

Saturday will be another hot one as we get near 90. Once again a pop and drop storm is not out of the question.  The last weekend of August and the meteorological summer is coming to an end with a feel like a mid-summer weekend.  Enjoy the warm weather if you like that, as the fall season is just around the corner. Technically, it begins on Monday as far as the meteorological autumn is concerned.

Meteorological summer is defined by the three hottest months, the meteorological winter is the three coldest months.  The seasons in-between are the transitional seasons of spring and fall.

Stay safe.
