Dry pattern continues, rain will return by Friday, wet weekend ahead

Bend, OR (KTVZ) -

Today and tomorrow are expected to be quiet and comfortable. Soak up the sun today because clouds increase Thursday as the atmosphere sets up for the next rain event. Highs will be in the 60s and lower 70s today but cool off a few degrees tomorrow.

A series of fronts are expected in the coming days, all stemming from a “parent” low pressure system that will be dropping in as we head into the weekend. This upper level low will bring cooler air from the Gulf of Alaska and funnel in subtropical moisture. Because the moisture is abundant and tropical in nature, it will be considered a weak to moderate Atmospheric River.

Rain returns Friday in the mid to late afternoon. The Valley is expected to receive a few inches of rain over the span of 3-4 days. We won’t see that much rain, but Friday should provide wetting showers into the night.

As temperatures continue to cool throughout the weekend, rain will turn to a wintry mix in some areas, and snow may start to accumulate on grassy areas by Sunday in the higher elevations. I’m not expecting much more than an inch, but measurable snowfall is possible.

The mountains will be able to pick up 6-12” of snowfall over the course of the weekend. Snow levels are expected to drop to pass level, which will make travel conditions tricky. You’ll want to plan accordingly.

We will continue to nail down future snowfall over the next couple of days. Pay attention for any Winter Weather Advisories that may be released by the NWS.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!
