One Class at a Time: Mr. Grubb from Obsidian Middle School honored for inspiring students with hands-on skills
REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ)-- There are some lessons we learn in school that last a lifetime and one Redmond teacher is making sure his students get those lessons early.
KTVZ News and Mid Oregon Credit Union surprised Obsidian Middle School teacher Dan Grubb with a $1,000 award through the One Class at a Time program, which recognizes educators who teach lifelong skills.
Grubb recently revived the school’s shop and career education program, drawing strong support from the Redmond community. Local residents have donated tools and materials to help his students learn practical trade skills. When KTVZ visited, students were busy building birdhouses for Think Wild, a local nonprofit focused on wildlife protection.
“So I think I'm going to put this thousand dollars toward a CNC router so that my students can come up with an idea in their head and then actually be able to create it with technology,” Grubb said.
The shop class has quickly gained popularity, with many students volunteering for extra credit just to participate. Even the school’s resource officer contributed by building shelving for the temporary classroom.
Grubb hopes to connect with local manufacturers and trade businesses to introduce his students to real-world career opportunities. His goal is to give young learners the kind of life skills they’ll use long after middle school.
