Deschutes County Search and Rescue locates two lost hikers near Green Lakes Trailhead

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Deschutes County Search and Rescue volunteers rescued two young men who became lost near the Green Lakes Trailhead on Feb. 7. The hikers, ages 18 and 20, were reported missing at approximately 6 p.m. in the area located off the Cascade Lakes Highway.
The rescue operation began after Deschutes County 911 received a report of the stranded pair just beyond Mt. Bachelor. Search and rescue volunteers were immediately activated and deployed to the backcountry to locate the men before weather conditions worsened.
Search and rescue volunteers used snowmobiles and snowshoes to reach the hikers in the terrain beyond Mt. Bachelor. Once the team located the men, they provided warming materials and performed a medical assessment. No major injuries were reported. After the evaluation, the volunteers transported both hikers back to their vehicle.
The incident prompted officials to remind the public that conditions in the backcountry can deteriorate rapidly. Deschutes County Search and Rescue recommended that anyone heading outdoors should know their route, plan ahead and check the weather forecast. They also advised hikers to dress appropriately for the conditions and carry a reliable device to contact emergency services.
The agency thanked its dedicated volunteers for their swift response to the nine-one-one call. Officials emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety and preparation when recreating in the Deschutes County area.
