THERE’S GOOD NEWS: Judge Crutchley offers free wedding ceremonies at Deschutes Courthouse

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) – Judge Raymond Crutchley will perform free wedding ceremonies and vow renewals on Friday the 13th at the Deschutes County Courthouse. The event, a longstanding tradition known as "Cupid's Docket".

While the event is typically held on Valentine's Day, it was moved to Friday the 13th this year because the courthouse is only open on weekdays. Crutchley has decorated the courtroom specifically for the occasion.

Judge Crutchley, who serves the 11th District of Deschutes County, said the tradition is enjoyed by both the public and courthouse employees. "Well, I think again, it brings people together, the community," Crutchley said. "It's a service to the community. The staff also enjoys doing it. And so, you know, anything of the sort that brings people together I'm all about."

Ceremonies will be held at the courthouse from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. While those looking to renew their vows can show up without an appointment, couples planning to get married must call ahead to arrange their specific ceremony time. All couples getting married are also required to obtain a valid wedding license prior to the event.

Court officials noted that fewer couples than usual have signed up to participate in the tradition this year. The lower turnout has been attributed to the superstition surrounding Friday the 13th.
