BEND, Ore. (KTVZ)-- The Bend Pops Orchestra will premiere a newly commissioned work titled "Return to Joy" at its spring concert on Sunday, June 7. The performance will begin at 2:00 p.m. at Mountain View High School in Bend.

The event is free and open to the public as the orchestra debuts the piece, which explores the complexity and courage embodied in the emotion of joy.

Composed by Dr. Jennifer Stevenson, the new work comes as the orchestra experiences a significant period of growth. The ensemble has doubled in size in recent years, largely due to musicians rediscovering their instruments after long absences.

The composition explores how music can reconnect individuals with a childlike sense of wonder during challenging times. Dr. Stevenson composed the piece specifically for the Bend Pops to highlight the fulfillment and connection found in ensemble music-making.

The theme of the work mirrors the recent development of the Bend Pops Orchestra, which has doubled in size over the last few years. Much of this growth is attributed to local musicians who have returned to their instruments following extended breaks from playing.

Stevenson is a chamber musician and composer with longstanding ties to the Central Oregon region. She has previously received local commissions from the Cascade Horizon Band and the Central Oregon Symphony. Her chamber works are frequently performed by Central Oregon Symphony musicians as part of the Music in Public Places concert series.

In addition to the concert, Stevenson will lead two masterclasses during the first week of June. These sessions are open to orchestra members, community musicians and any interested residents living throughout Central Oregon.

Specific dates and participation details for the masterclasses will be announced on the Bend Pops Orchestra website and social media platforms.
