High Desert Heat Wave: From Mother’s Day Gusts to a Sunnier Monday

Tonight: Mother’s Day Wind-Down

As the sun sets on Mother’s Day, conditions will remain partly cloudy and noticeably breezy. If you are finishing up a backyard barbecue or heading out for a late evening walk in Bend or Redmond, be prepared for northwest winds gusting up to 35 mph. These gusts will begin to taper off after sunset, leaving us with a calm, cool night.

  • Low Temps: Mid-30s to lower 40s.
  • Evening Activity: Secure any lightweight patio furniture or hanging flower baskets gifted today.
  • Pet Owners: It’s a great night for a final "zoomie" session before the wind picks up, but keep a jacket handy for the chill.

Monday Morning: Sunny Start to the Week

Monday begins with a few lingering clouds that will quickly clear, making way for a beautiful, sunny afternoon. For those in the valleys around Madras and Prineville, temperatures will climb rapidly, reaching the upper 70s to low 80s by mid-afternoon.

  • Commute & Recreation: Expect light winds early in the day, providing ideal conditions for a morning hike or bike ride on Phil's Trail before the afternoon heat settles in.
  • High Temps: 77°C–82°C (Valleys); Mid-60s to upper 70s (Cascades).
  • Gardening Tip: With the sun coming out in full force and highs hitting the 80s, check the soil moisture for any new spring plantings or Mother’s Day starts.

Looking Ahead: Early Summer Heat

Keep the sunscreen nearby—we are tracking a significant warm-up for Tuesday, with highs expected to push into the upper 80s and low 90s. This early taste of summer will be brief, as a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms returns to the forecast for Wednesday.
