Cool and dreary Friday ahead of a dry and mild weekend

Bend, Ore (KTVZ) – The severe weather and Local Alert Weather Day are now behind us. Although some lingering showers remain from a passing cold front today, we are now in line to dry out for the weekend.

The rain cooled air and lack of sunshine will keep the temperatures well below normal, only making it to the 50s most spots. The soaking rains today are a nice contrast to the powerful rainfall from Thursday. The beneficial slow and light rain will help our parched soil, as the heavy rains added a bit to the reservoirs.

Saturday will be a mild day with highs in the middle to upper 60s. Normal for this time of year is around 70 so we are getting close to that number. Skies will be mostly sunny and the sunshine will help dry out the area. Personally, it would be nice to get a few more days of slow soaking rain, but I am thankful for what we did get.

Overnight Saturday into Sunday we will get to experience a rare lunar event, a Blue Moon. No, the moon is not going to appear blue, but the expression applies to the second full moon during the same month. It is not all that rare, occurring about once every two or three years, but it has been associated with a saying “once in a blue moon”.  That is referring to a rare event or experience that rarely happens, like making all green lights on my way to work.  One explanation of the nickname is from the 16^th century when someone was doubting the church and sarcastically stated the “if they say is blue, then it must be true” then it morphed into something that is rare.  Many other reasons are possible, but that is the one most widely referenced when explaining the “Blue Moon”.

Back to the weather, after the blue moon before sunrise Sunday, the second day of the weekend will be dry and mild.  This will be one of a number of days that will be rain-free and mostly sunny.

The dry pattern is expected to linger through the first week of June and into next weekend.  I do see some variably cloudy skies by the middle of the week, but no rain. There may be some light rain across the Cascades Friday but not expecting any to make it past the east face.
