Superintendent Steve Cook addresses community after Silver Rail Elementary tragedy
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steve Cook released a video statement Sunday evening, communicating the latest for district students, parents and staff following the shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School.
Cook addressed the tragedy in a message to the school community, describing the impact on local families and neighbors across Bend. “A few days ago, an awful thing happened inside Silver Rail Elementary. We lost three students and one teacher and two others were injured,” Cook said. “We hold each of them and their families and their loved ones, close in our hearts as we mourn together as one community.”
Local businesses, organizations and neighbors have offered support and assistance following the incident. “Your meals, your generosity and expressions of love are helping people through very painful days,” Cook said.
Cook encouraged community members to support each other through informal gatherings while the district processes the events. “You can gather informally to talk, to listen, to grieve, or simply just sit together. You do not need an organized event or even the right words to share companionship,” Cook said.
District leadership emphasized a commitment to providing transparent updates as details are confirmed. “We will share verified information and acknowledge that which remains yet unknown,” Cook said. “Our responsibilities to care for one another will continue well beyond these first days. So will my commitment to you.”
District schools and activities are scheduled to resume on Wednesday. School officials plan to communicate directly with Silver Rail Elementary families and staff regarding their specific needs while sharing next steps with the broader school community.
