Smoke in elevator prompts St. Charles Heart and Lung Center evacuation
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- A smoking rubber belt in an elevator shaft at the St. Charles Bend Heart and Lung Center Tuesday morning prompted a "Code Red" fire alarm and brief evacuation of the building, an official said.
The alarm was activated around 11 a.m. when a rubber belt in the elevator began rubbing and creating smoke, hospital spokeswoman Lisa Goodman said.
Bend Fire & Rescue responded and determined the cause and that there was no active fire in the building, Goodman said.
People were allowed to return inside after a short period and the elevator is being evaluated to determine when it can go back into service, the hospital spokeswoman said, adding, "We appreciate the quick response of everyone involved."
