Two men charged, one bitten by DCSO K-9 after pursuit west of Redmond
REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) – A pursuit of a pickup truck being driven without headlights or tail lights west of Redmond early Thursday ended with charges against two men, one bitten by Deschutes County sheriff’s K-9 Ezel when deputies say he refused to comply with commands or show his hands.
Around 3 a.m., a deputy spotted the Chevy pickup without lights on, heading west on Highway 126 near Northwest 101st Street, Sgt, Jayson Janes said. The driver, later identified as a 27-year-old Sisters man, refused to pull over.
The deputy continued the pursuit until he lost sight of the pickup in the area of Peterson Ridge Road and Forest Service Road 4606, Janes said.
The deputy turned off his patrol car and heard two men talking nearby, the sergeant said. The deputy found the truck near the intersection of Forest Service roads 4606 and 901.
While waiting for backup to arrive, Janes said, the deputy began giving commands. A 40-year-old Bend man walked up to the deputy and was taken into custody without incident.
With the help of a drone and K-9 Ezel and his partner, Deputy Jeremiah Johnson, the Sisters man was found about 120 yards from the truck. When he did not comply with commands and refuse to show his hands, the man ultimately was bitten and taken into custody.
A user amount of methamphetamine was found inside the pickup, Janes said.
The Sisters man was evaluated by paramedics and taken to the county jail on charges of felony attempt to elude, reckless driving, hindering prosecution and felony meth possession.
The Bend man was cited and released on a probation violation warrant, felony meth possession and misdemeanor attempt to elude, the sergeant said.
