C. Oregon Kids Compete in ‘Battle of the Books’

Cascade Middle School held host to the regional Battle of the Books on Saturday. Teams who won the competition go on to the state leve.

A total of 29 teams from three divisions — elementary, middle and high school — were competing for just three slots.

The teams included students from Bend, Redmond and Tumalo. They had to answer two types of questions, and each question was worth five points.

“It’s as competitive as basketball or football or soccer or any other kind of sport,” said Amy Wilde, librarian at Cascade Middle School. “It is serious business, and I am not kidding.”

Wilde says she usually kicks off the competition at Cascade in November and gives the students a couple months to read through the books and form teams — and then they start battles in early February.

She says the Battle of the Books is great for students, as they learn reading and comprehension.

Teams from Mountain View High School, Cascade Middle School and Lava Ridge Elementary will be going to the state competition.
