Smith Rock Muddy Pig Run: down and dirty

You can describe this event in Terrebonne Sunday as one muddy mess.

It was the inaugural Smith Rock Muddy Pig Run at the DD Ranch in Terrebonne.

Organizers say this is an effort to bring a “mud run” to Central Oregon. They have become popular throughout the country.

This particular one had a country feeling to it. The obstacle course consisted of things you would find on a cattle ranch.

Competitors go through a lot of mud as they wind their way through a 1.5-mile nature trail, with a pond and a bridge, and the runners also have to duck under poles and hurdle straw bales.

“This is just absolutely crazy,” said Brian Douglass, president of the Smith Rock Race Group. “As you look around and see all these different teams and everybody out there, just dressed in costumes.”

This event is put on the same weekend as Saturday’s Half Classic Marathon at Smith Rock.

About 500 competed in that event, and about 300 were expected in Sunday’s Muddy Pig Run.

There was also a Lil’ Piggy Mud Run for kids 2 to 12, before the main event.

And by the way, there were two real requirements : one to have fun and two, to get dirty.
