Drivers face challenges in fire-hit SE Oregon

Due to numerous fire-related highway closures in southeast Oregon, the state Department of Transportation advised motorists Tuesday to avoid travel in the area if possible, until conditions improve.

As of late Tuesday afternoon, the following highway sections were closed due to fire / smoke::

–U.S. Hwy. 95 between Burns Junction and the Nevada border (MP 66-121)

–U.S. Hwy. 395 at MP 6-C, six miles south of John Day

–OR Hwy. 205 (Frenchglen Hwy.) between Pea Hill and Rock Creek Lane (MP 58 – 66) near Frenchglen.

Before 9 p.m., Highway 395 was reopened to two-lane travel south of John Day, though ODOT said motorists should expect smoke and fire crews, and drive with caution.

Highway 205 also reopened to two-way traffic, hours after the closure, and the same warnings applied — to drive with caution and be ready for smoke and fire equipment.

ODOT officials said wind conditions are creating challenging fire and smoke hazards, resulting in unpredictable and long highway closures.
