Prineville man arrested on rape charges

A 66-year-old Prineville man was arrested on rape, abuse and other charges early Friday, accused of assaulting a 47-year-old woman he’d invited into his home, police said.

Along with first-degree rape and sex abuse charges, Karl Edward Jansson was held on $100,000 bail at the Crook County Jail on fourth-degree assault and harassment charges, said police Capt. Michael Boyd.

Shortly before midnight, the woman reported she had been sexually assaulted at a home in the 500 block of NE Third Street, Boyd said.

The alleged attack had occurred a short time earlier and the victim called a family member, who took her to the police department, Boyd said.

She told police Jansson had used force, and she suffered minor injuries, Boyd said. The woman later was treated at Pioneer Memorial Hospital.

The man and woman “were acquaintances,” he said. She lives nearby, and Jansson allegedly asked if she wanted to come over, “sit around and talk awhile — something along those lines,” Boyd said. “From what we can tell there was no prior relationship, no dating.”

Police, assisted by Crook County sheriff’s deputies, found Jansson at his home and arrested him. Later Friday, Boyd said, a search warrant was served at his home to seek evidence.

The investigation is continuing, Boyd said.
