Driver’s fatal ‘medical crisis’ triggers Bend crash

A fatal “medical crisis” sent a driver’s pickup truck careening onto a downtown Bend sidewalk, then striking a mini-van and two other cars before coming to a stop during Thursday’s lunch hour, police said. Fortunately, no one else was injured, they added.

Officers responded around 12:20 p.m. to the reported four-vehicle crash near NW Wall Street and Portland Avenue, said Lt. Chris Carney.

An investigation found the man driving a black Nissan pickup was southbound on Wall Street “when he suffered an apparent medical crisis,” Carney said.

The pickup went up onto the sidewalk and traveled about 120 yards before striking a mini-van, the lieutenant said.

The Nissan continued south, colliding with two other vehicles at the Wall and Portland intersection before coming to a stop, Carney said.

Officers and Bend Fire Department medics performed CPR on the driver, but he did not survive and was pronounced dead at the scene, Carney said.

The name of the adult male was being withheld until family members were notified.
