Two arrested in NE Bend bicycle thefts

Two Bend men have been arrested in connection with the theft of four bikes worth more than $11,000 in two recent burglaries at the Eastside Hutch’s Bicycles and an unsuccessful burglary at the Gear Peddler in northeast Bend, police said Saturday night.

On Oct. 22, Hutch’s Bicycles at 820 NE Third Street was burglarized during the night, and two new bikes worth about $6,700 total were stolen, said Lt. Paul Kansky.

The night of Dec. 13, an attempted burglary occurred at the Gear Peddler, 184 NE Greenwood Avenue, but was unsuccessful, he said.

Last Tuesday, Dec. 18, around 3:35 a.m., Hutch’s was burglarized again, and two more bikes, worth a combined $4,240, were stolen, Kansky said.

Police investigated and collected evidence, then on Friday received further information about the stolen bikes that pointed to Shon E. Lockwood Jr., 22, and William E. Vanzandt, 20, as the suspects in the burglaries.

Bend patrol officers contacted Lockwood and Vanzandt at their home, where three stolen bikes were recovered during a search, Kansky said. The fourth bicycle was recovered earlier through other means, he added.

Vanzandt was arrested on a second-degree criminal mischief charge, related to the Gear Peddler incident, and lodged at the Deschutes County Jail, where he was released later Friday, a jail officer said.

Lockwood was issued a citation in lieu of custody on second-degree burglary and theft charges, Kansky said.

The Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office will be considering more charges of burglary, theft and criminal mischief for both suspects, the lieutenant added.
