Bend offering Police Citizens Academy

KTVZ

Enrollment is open for the Bend Police Department Citizens Academy. The spring 2013 academy begins March 20.

Classes will be held each Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Bend Police Department, 555 NE 15th St. in Bend. The academy is free but space is limited and early signup is recommended.

The course has received recognition as a national and regional model and continues to be a highly popular program in the community.

The goal of the academy is to inform and educate participants about the Police Department and the variety of ways it carries out its mission.

Instruction covers topics including narcotics, K9’s, officer survival, traffic, SWAT and more.

The classes are taught by various officers chosen according to their specific area of expertise in law enforcement.

When students graduate, they are eligible to become Bend Police Volunteers. Volunteers work at assignments such as abandoned vehicles, couriers, accessible parking enforcement and special events.

Applications can be picked up at the Bend Police Reception Desk. For additional information, contact Steve Esselstyn at 541-322-2976 or sesselstyn@ci.bend.or.us.
