A Vancouver, Wash. man was seriously injured in an ATV crash south of Redmond Saturday night, but two other riders, including a 5-year-old girl, escaped serious injuries, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputies were dispatched shortly before 8:30 p.m. to SW McVey Avenue near 46 th Street south of town on the reported crash of an ATV with three riders – James Cook, 54, of Redmond, Bradley Wegner, 54, of Vancouver, Wash., and a 5-year-old Redmond girl, said sheriff’s Lt. Chad Davis.

Wegner was flown by Life Flight helicopter to St. Charles-Bend with critical injuries, Davis said. A nursing supervisor said he was in serious condition Sunday afternoon. Cook sustained minor injuries and the girl was not hurt, Davis added.

The initial investigation found the three were on an ATV heading east on McVey when, for unknown reasons, the ATV crashed, throwing its three riders to the road. Davis said none were wearing helmets or other protective gear.

Witnesses to the crash were urged to contact the sheriff’s office at (541) 693-6911 as the investigation continues.

Oregon State Police and the Redmond Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
