Powered parglider crashes near Santiam Pass
A Springfield man was seriously injured Sunday morning when the powered paraglider he was operating lost power after takeoff and crashed near Santiam Pass, Oregon State Police reported.
According to OSP Senior Trooper Toni Raugust, around 10:15 a.m., James M. Carter, 55, had just lifted off in the flying machine, an ultralight in a sport also known as paramotoring, near the ODOT Santiam Pass compound.
As he rose to about tree level, about 100 feet off the ground, the flying machine lost power and crashed to the ground, the trooper said.
Raugust and medics from Black Butte Ranch Rural Fire District and Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District responded to the scene.
Carter was taken by ambulance to St. Charles-Bend Medical Center in Bend, where a nursing supervisor said he was listed in serious condition Monday morning.
