Names released in Hwy. 20 double-fatal crash

Oregon State Police on Saturday identified two drivers who were killed and a passenger injured Friday afternoon when a car and pickup collided nearly head-on on Hwy. 20 near Suttle Lake, west of Sisters, Oregon State Police reported.

Shortly before 2:30 p.m. Friday, a silver Acura SUV driven by Bruce Sirnio, 61, of Salem, was heading west near milepost 86 when it crossed, for unknown reasons, into the oncoming lane, troopers said.

Sirnio’s SUV struck an eastbound black Toyota pickup driven by Andrew DeVerna, a 42-year-old Newberg man, they said.

Both drivers were fatally injured at the crash scene, troopers said. A 41-year-old King City woman riding in the pickup, Wendi Dion, was taken by ambulance to St. Charles-Bend with what troopers said were non-life-threatening injuries. A nursing supervisor said she was treated for her injuries and released.

Troopers said all three occupants were wearing seat belts, and both vehicles’ air bags deployed.

OSP was assisted at the scene by ODOT and the Black Butte Ranch Police Department, Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Black Butte Ranch Fire Department and Sisters Fire Department.

The highway was closed for about three hours during the investigation, backing up traffic for several miles.

The crash occurred west of Suttle Lake and east of Santiam Pass, where winter driving conditions had returned during a mostly dry winter.

The road was shut until after dark for the crash investigation and reconstruction. Motorists were urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes if possible.
