With focus on advancing educational opportunities, Central Oregon Latino Scholarship Fund announced Thursday it is offering academic scholarships to support college-bound Latino students.

The privately managed fund has set aside $10,000 to fund scholarships in 2014, which will be awarded to qualifying students who enroll in Oregon colleges, universities and trade schools.

Central Oregon Latino Scholarship Fund provides opportunities for Latino/Hispanic students living in the Central Oregon region to complete their post high school career/degree goals. This scholarship’s primary aim is to build leadership in our communities.

“It’s an honor to have the opportunity to support Central Oregonians and provide students the means to achieve their educational goals,” said Jaime Aguirre, fund chair. “This program is an additional source for overcoming the financial barrier to higher education.”

To be eligible for this scholarship, a complete application and required documents must be postmarked by April 10, 2014.

Entering freshmen and continuing college students from Deschutes, Jefferson or Crook counties seeking their first academic degree, and students in an accredited technical training program that leads to licensing may apply.

The current scholarship cycle will award five ($1,000) scholarships by a local volunteer committee, and an additional $5,000 in partnership with the Portland Metro Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Scholarship applications are available at the fund website: colsf.net.

Central Oregon Latino Scholarship Fund was created as a project of the Oregon Community Foundation’s Latino Partnership Project, and has awarded scholarships since 2010.

Formally established in 2012 as a 501(c)3 non-profit, COLSF has awarded college scholarships to 17 Central Oregon students to date. Fund chair, Jaime Aguirre, is challenging community members to help grow the fund to establish an endowment to continue providing this valuable resource and create a lasting impression on the lives of Central Oregonians.
