One last fund-raiser for Bend Fire stairclimbers

KTVZ

Bend Fire says, “We need your help!” Longboard Louie’s has very generously offered a portion of their sales this Thursday as their donation for cancer research.

Stop by, have a delicious lunch or dinner, and lend your support for the cause! Either location, Westside or Eastside; lunch and dinner.

On Sunday, Bend firefighters will be in Seattle to compete in the 23 rd Annual Scott Firefighters Stair Climb challenge. This event is a fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and draws firefighters from around the world to Seattle to climb 69 floors of Seattle’s tallest building, the Columbia Center.

They do the climb in all of their protective gear including air tank and mask, more than 60 pounds of total gear worn as they climb the 1,311 steps.

In 2013, the event drew over 1,500 firefighters and brought in a record $1.44 million for blood-cancer research and patient services. Bend Fire Department Captain Scott Wyman finished with the fastest time of the Bend firefighters at 13 minutes, 20 seconds (that’s 100 steps per minute!).

Bend Fire’s inspiration to compete this year is 12 year old Mechai Meadows, who is currently fighting Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Find more information about Mechai on Facebook by looking up The Mechai Project.

If you can’t make it to this event, and would like to donate to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society on behalf of your Bend Fire & Rescue team, you can make a donation online by visiting www.firefighterstairclimb.org. Our goal is to raise $26,500 this year as a team and we are well on our way to that goal, but we still need our communities help to reach our goal!

On behalf of Mechai and all those battling blood cancers, thank you for your support
