A 26-year-old La Pine woman was arrested on attempted murder and assault charges Saturday night, accused of slashing a 52-year-old La Pine man’s throat with a knife, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said Sunday.

Deputies were dispatched around 6 p.m. Saturday to a reported assault at a home on Riverland Avenue, said sheriff’s Sgt. Try Rupert. They learned en route that a man had been cut with a knife.

Deputies and detectives who investigated the incident learned that Heather Lee Chapman had cut Victor Evangelista “for an unknown reason,” Rupert said in a news release. Sheriff’s Sgt. Kevin Dizney told NewsChannel 21 on Monday that Chapman is accused of cutting the throat of Evangelista, who is a neighbor.

Evangelista was treated at the scene by medics with the La Pine Rural Fire District, then flown by air ambulance to St. Charles Bend.

While Rupert said the victim sustained life-threatening injuries, Evangelista was listed in fair condition Sunday, and later released from the hospital.

“Evangelista and other witnesses on scene were able to identify the suspect as Heather Chapman,” Rupert wrote.

Chapman was arrested on charges of attempted murder, first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon. She was booked late Saturday into the county jail in Bend, where she remained held Sunday on $360,000 bail.

Rupert said any more details would be released by detectives.
