Deschutes SAR helps injured Todd Lake snowshoer
Deschutes County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue was called out to assist an injured snowshoer near Todd Lake on Wednesday afternoon but she declined treatment or further assistance after her group was brought back to their cars, officials said.
SAR received a request around 1:20 p.m. to assist Mardi Jensen, 67, of Bend, who had been snowshoeing with a group on Dutchman Snowshoe Trail, about one-third of a mile north of the Cascade Lakes Highway, said Lt. Bryan Husband, special services coordinator.
Jensen had a non-life-threatening injury that left her unable to snowshoe back to her starting point at the Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center, Husband said.
Sheriff’s deputies were assisted by six SAR volunteers. Four were deployed on a pair of snowmobiles and two track ATVs.
Jensen’s group was located and brought back to their vehicles at the Nordic Center, Husband said, adding that Jensen had appropriate clothing and supplies and was recreating with a group, which is always recommended.
Once cellphone communications were acquired, the group also correctly stayed in the same spot, simplifying the SAR mission, Husband said.

DCSO Search and Rescue would like to remind our backcountry enthusiasts that although you cannot always control problems that arise, you should always be prepared with the appropriate clothing and supplies. Ten essential systems to consider providing for are:
Navigation-map, GPS, cell phone, compass, etc.
Sun Protection-sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, etc.
Insulation-appropriate layered clothing
Illumination-headlamp, flashlight, extra batteries
First-Aid Supplies-basic supplies and any current medications
Fire-waterproof matches, butane lighter, etc.
Repair Kit/Tools-multi-tool, duct tape, etc.
Nutrition-high energy, no-cook foods
Hydration-extra water
Emergency Shelter-space blanket, bright plastic tarp, large plastic trash bags
Deschutes County Search and Rescue is currently accepting applications for new volunteers. This application process will be closed on January 31 st , 2015.
