Buehler launches coalition for Mirror Pond project

KTVZ

State Rep. Knute Buehler, R-Bend, said Thursday he has launched a coalition for the Mirror Pond Project, working to build support for a recently developed vision for the waterway as he seeks to secure $5 million in state lottery bonds to help fund it.

In the announcement, Buehler said several community organizations have already joined the coalition, demonstrating strong local support for the project. He asked members to be ready to make their voices heard at key moments during the legislative process for HB 3283.

Buehler introduced HB 3283, which would provide $5 million in state funding from lottery bonds for the Mirror Pond project. The rest of the funding would have to be raised through a mixture of public and private sources.

“The Mirror Pond project presents a long-lasting vision for our community – a vision that will pass on a better Bend and healthier river for our children and grandchildren while preserving an iconic symbol of our city,” Buehler said.

The lawmaker said the Mirror Pond project will restore the river to a more natural flow, enhance wildlife habitat and increase recreational options. The project also presents an opportunity for public and private economic development, improvement of existing parks and creation of new open spaces.

“The Bend Park and Recreation District Board, Bend City Council, and growing number of local environmental, business and community endorsements prove that careful and collaborative planning, protecting the environment and growing our economy can all work together,” Buehler said.

He also released a list of community organizations who back the Mirror Pond Project, including:

• Bend Park and Recreation District Board

• Bend City Council

• Bend Chamber of Commerce

• Deschutes River Conservancy

• The Environmental Center

• Bend Paddle Trail Alliance

• Bend 2030

• Downtown Bend Business Association

• Save Mirror Pond
