Familiar Bend produce stand opens for season

Summer is getting closer, and so is the opening of farmer’s market season in Central Oregon. But locals don’t need to wait any longer to get the freshest produce.

Since 1983, The Vegetable Man Produce has been serving the Bend area with produce from all over the West Coast.

Andrea Couch has literally grown up in the business, having recently bought the stand from her parents with her husband.

“We started when I was just 6 years old, in 1983 on Greenwood Avenue,” Couch said Monday. “I would help my dad, and I would stand on a step-stool and weight the produce.”

The stand has been at its current location on the south end of Bend, at Reed Lane and Third Street, for nearly under five years.

“I love the fact that we are providing a great product to our community that we can be proud of,” said Andrea’s husband, Ryan Couch. “I love being a part of something that’s been a part of Bend for 30-plus years.”

The Vegetable Man is now open seven days a week until the end of the season.
