Fast-moving wildfire destroys buildings at Biggs Junction
A fast-moving wildfire has destroyed buildings in the small Columbia River Gorge town of Biggs Junction, Hood River County authorities confirmed late Wednesday afternoon.
Rising temperatures, gusty winds and low humidity have combined to create especially high wildfire danger in the gorge and across much of Oregon, with the National Weather Service issuing a red flag warning until 8 p.m. for areas including Central Oregon.
Wednesday morning, KGW reported, a fire broke out between the small towns of Biggs and Rufus, in the Columbia River Gorge. Due to the fire, US Highway 30 was closed in both directions. In addition, shoulders along Interstate 84 were closed in both directions, due to smoke from the wildfire. Motorists were advised to drive with caution in the area and expect long delays.
As winds fanned the flames eastward, the fire consumed buildings in its path, according to county dispatchers. They were unsure exactly how many buildings were damaged. Firefighters from five different agencies were assisting with battling the blaze.
