FBI standoff leads to arrest in Warm Springs
Federal officers arrested a Warm Springs man Wednesday on charges of assault on a federal officer stemming from an armed standoff at his home on Monday.
Jonathan Courtney is being held in Portland and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge, Patricia Sullivan on Wednesday morning.
In a criminal complaint, Detective Sam Williams with the Warm Springs Police confirmed he, along with other officers, were called to 1320 B Deer Loop due to gunshot complaints.
When they arrived that night, Williams said they made contact with the 35-year-old suspect and that he was intoxicated.
He also said that Courtney asked to see Warm Springs Police Chief Dennis White III. He says White III walked towards the house and standing 15 yards away, waved at Courtney, who was standing in the doorway.
Williams says that’s when Courtney pulled out and pointed a Glock Model 19, 9mm pistol at White and began counting down from three.
The criminal complaint says, “Chief White III later told me when Courtney pointed the pistol at him, he believed he was going to be shot.” White is a federal law enforcement officer with the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Williams also told investigators that as White III was walking away a female neighbor and friend of Courtney, Siagigi Hintsataki, ran into the residence against police wishes.
Police say Courtney came out of the home, armed, several times. They say at one point he yelled, “Just shoot me!”
On one of these occasions, Courtney came out of the house, followed by Hintsataki. She allegedly locked the door behind them, and Courtney allegedly fired a shot in the direction of the officers. Police say she then tried to get the gun away from him. In the struggle, she was shot in the leg.
The criminal complaint says that at some point in the early morning on Tuesday, Hintsataki walked out of the house. Police were able to enter and found Courtney asleep. They say they found five firearms, including the pistol, in his residence.
Neighbors and friends told NewsChannel 21 that Courtney was a decorated war veteran. An article in the Warm Springs newspaper, the Spilyay Tymoo, says he was given several honors. They said he suffered from PTSD and that he was very vocal about it.
One neighbor said that he would talk about hearing people outside his apartment at night. Another friend said that they would have never expected this from Courtney and it was not like him.
His next court date is Oct. 1 in Portland.
