Fire destroys trailer home in La Pine
A La Pine trailer home was destroyed by fire late Wednesday morning, but firefighters working in sub-freezing temperatures kept the flames from spreading to nearby outbuildings and an RV, officials said.
La Pine Rural Fire Protection District crews responded around 11 a.m. to the reported structure fire at 52995 Day Road, said Fire Chief Mike Supkis. Several callers driving by on Day Road saw the fire and called 911, while some stopped and knocked on the door to make sure no one was inside, one even breaking a window, to no response.
The first crews to arrive found the trailer with several additions fully involved, Supkis said. Property owner Mike Wengerer and his son Robert had left a couple of hours earlier. No one on scene was injured – however, a couple dogs were unaccounted for
A total of 13 firefighters were called to the fire, working as heavy snow fell with temperatures in the low 20s to contain the fire to the structure of origin, the fire chief said. One engine, two water tender and three command and support vehicles responded, along with Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies.
The trailer was a total loss, and the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, Supkis said. There also was no damage estimate as of yet, though Supkis said it’s believed to be insured.
The firefighting efforts prompted closure of Day Road for three hours, with one-way traffic restriction for the rest of the afternoon.
Sunriver firefighters assisted by sending an engine crew, as La Pine Fire medics were transporting two unrelated medical calls to St. Charles Bend at the time of the fire.
