Bend man arrested, accused of firing shot in air

A Bend man allegedly involved in a drug deal gone bad has been arrested on several charges, including firing a gun in the air from a car while being pursued by the intended customers wanting their money back, police said Monday.

Daniel David Olano, 19, is the only one charged in the incident, which occurred on the night of Friday, Jan. 15, said Lt. Clint Burleigh.

Burleigh said the woman contacted Olano at a home in the 1800 block of Northeast Wichita Way, giving Olano and another man money in exchange for the attempted drug purchase.

The pair left the home, and the woman, accompanied by two male passengers, pursued the car with Olano and the other man inside for about 10 minutes, trying to get them to stop and return the money, the lieutenant said. The woman trying to buy the drugs called police to report the shot being fired, he added.

Police detectives followed up and that night found and arrested Olano over the gunshot. Burleigh said he also was found to possess about an ounce of methamphetamine.

A raid on Olano’s home the next day led to the seizure of five firearms and evidence of drug manufacturing and distribution, the officer said, adding that one of the guns is believed to have been used during the Jan. 15 incident.

Olano initially was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, three counts of menacing and drug manufacture, distribution and possession. Later charges included second-degree theft, second-degree criminal mischief and a probation violation.

Olano was released from jail Jan. 19 after posting 10 percent of his $25,000 bail, pending a Feb. 11 court date, according to jail officials.
