New principals chosen for Amity, High Lakes Elementary

Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Shay Mikalson announced Friday the hiring of two new principals at area elementary schools. Andrew Slavin is slated to become the next principal at Amity Creek Magnet at Thompson School and Linda Burley is slated to become the next principal at High Lakes Elementary School.

Amity Creek:

Slavin is currently the director of Costa Verde International School in Sayulita, Mexico, a position he has served in for two years. Prior to that he served as a principal for three years and assistant principal for two years at Green School in Bali, Indonesia. Previously he served as intervention program coordinator at Cascade Middle School in Bend and assistant principal at a middle school in California. Slavin began his career in education as a sixth grade teacher in California and has 10 years of classroom teaching experience.

“I am looking forward to joining the dynamic Amity Creek community and sharing my experiences to enhance the amazing learning journey already in place. I am excited to experience my first Community Time on the first day of the 2016-17 school year, and to getting to know the incredible students, staff and families at the school,” said Slavin.

Slavin will begin his position July 1; current principal Carol Hammett is retiring at the end of the school year.

High Lakes:

Linda Burley is currently the assistant principal at High Lakes, a position she has served in for three years. Prior to that Burley served as student services coordinator at High Lakes for twoyears and split her time serving as assistant principal and district literacy specialist for twoyears. Burley also served as the assistant principal at Bear Creek Elementary School in Bend for three years. She began her career in education as teacher in Beaverton and Hillsboro and has more than 10 years of classroom teaching experience.

“I am very excited and honored to be selected for this position and to continue the great work we have been doing at High Lakes. It’s a great school, filled with great people in a great community,” said Burley. “It’s a privilege to continue working here.”

Burley will begin her position July 1; current principal Susan Heberlein is retiring at the end of the school year.
