Missing Redmond man’s body found at Smith Rock

The body of a Redmond man who had been missing for three days was found Monday at the bottom of a 150-foot ravine at Smith Rock State Park, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputies were called to the park around 10:40 a.m. on a report of a missing person, said lt. Chad Davis. Family members of Terry Michael Hoyez, 57, said he’d been missing for three days and they had just found his vehicle in the park’s parking lot.

Deputies began searching the park by vehicle and on foot. Around 1:40 p.m., a deputy spotted a body at the bottom of a ravine about 150 feet below the park ranger’s office, Davis said.

Due to the location of the body, the county Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Mountain Rescue Unit was dispatched in a recovery effort. A total of 18 volunteers responded, along with a special service deputy, to assist those already on scene. Hoyez’s body was placed in a litter and hoisted up from the ledge below.

Sheriff’s detectives and the county Medical Examiner’s Office also were called to the scene for a death investigation. Davis said foul play was not suspected and the investigation was continuing.
