Deadly northwest Bend crash shocks neighbors

A 41-year-old Bend man was killed when his car hit a parked car, then struck a large tree in northwest Bend early Friday morning, police said.

Police responded to the crash at 12:48 a.m. in the 100 block of Northwest Milwaukee Avenue, said Sgt. Dan Ritchie.

A preliminary investigation found that the 2001 Buick LeSabre driven by Troy Benjamin Beck was heading north on Northwest 12th Street when it struck a parked car near Lexington Avenue, Ritchie said.

The car continued north until it struck a large Ponderosa pine at 12th Street and Northwest Milwaukie Avenue, he said.

Beck, alone in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene, the sergeant said, adding that the investigation was continuing.

Neighbors said they awakened to the sound of breaking glass and ran outside, then called 911.

“We’re pretty shaken up,” said Jessica Carr. “Nothing really happens here. It’s a slow street and a slow neighborhood. We know everyone, really. It’s pretty friendly.”

Newport Avenue Market General Manager Joe Anzaldo said his store is just steps away, so it easily could have happened there.

“I drive down that street, so it could have been me there. It could have been anyone,” he said.
