Public invited to Bend service for Russell Bird
A memorial service is planned Monday evening in Bend for NewsChannel 21 friend and colleague Russell Bird, who passed away two weeks ago.
The public is invited to join Russell’s family, friends and co-workers at a remembrance ceremony at Journey Church, 70 Northwest Newport Avenue. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the service begins at 7:30 p.m.
After the service, those who wish are welcome to join the family in a candlelight walk and vigil at Brooks Park, across the street.
The family held services earlier in Ohio.
Three Rivers Humane Society will be at the Bend service to accept donations in Russell’s name, and a furry friend or two also may be on hand.
As we’ve been reporting, one of Russell’s favorite things was our weekly “Pet Pals” visit with the Humane Society of Central Oregon.
A few weeks ago, Russell did a story about the Madras shelter, which is raising $400,000 for an indoor shelter for all animals during the winter, as many dogs are left outside during the winter due to lack of space.
Two weeks ago, Russell’s family decided that in lieu of flowers, those who would like should contribute to the Three Rivers ‘Raise the Woof’ campaign.
Since then, more than $31,000 in donations have poured in from caring viewers and friends, pushing the overall total to more than $119,000.
Three Rivers officials told us Friday that when they reach their funding goal, they will name the new facility’s “meet and greet” room “Russell’s Place.”
You can send donations to the Three Rivers Humane Society, P.O. Box 66, Madras, OR 97741 or visit http://www.threerivershs.org .
