Smith Rock State Park starts ‘Leave No Trace’ initiative

Conservation at Smith Rock has been on a constant decline as visitor counts rise, which is why park managers have rolled out a new initiative.

“Smith Rock State Park and a team of people from the community got together with Leave No Trace out of Boulder, Colorado, and they helped us come up with a customized five principles plan. It’s called Smith Rock Needs Your Help,” said Park Manager Scott Brown.

These five simple steps include staying on trails, keeping your pets on leash, being respectful to others, being prepared for your recreational activities and helping to preserve species for future generations.

With only four park employees at Smith Rock, and the added attention of last year’s ‘Seven Wonders’ tourism campaign, park managers are looking to you to help keep the special place beautiful.

“We’re trying to reach the people who are already passionate about this place. And we need them to help us and that’s the only way it’s going to work,” Brown said.
