Shot OSP trooper undergoes second surgery

KTVZ

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon State Police trooper wounded in a Christmas night gun battle in suburban Portland underwent a second surgery Tuesday and remains in critical condition, officials said.

Capt. Bill Fugate told a news conference that 32-year-old Trooper Nic Cederberg was undergoing the second of what is expected to be many surgeries following the shootout Sunday.

Fugate declined to say how many times Cederberg was shot or to more precisely describe his injuries, citing his family’s wishes. He did say the trooper gave his wife a high-five following his first surgery Monday.

Police initially responded to a report of a shooting in King City, where they found a woman’s body. A 30-year-old suspect, James Tylka, was seen driving away, and officers pursued him.

The chase ended with a shootout about 20 miles south of Portland. Tylka was killed.

Tuesday news release from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office:

This is an update on the homicide in King City that preceded the officer involved shooting south of Sherwood on December 25.

The victim of the homicide that occurred in King City has been identified as Katelynn Tylka-Armand, she was 24 years old and from Beaverton. Katelynn was married to the suspect, James Tylka, although they were separated. They have a child together, she is 11 months old. James Tylka has an 8-year-old son from a previous relationship.

On Christmas night, Katelynn was dropping off their child at James’ residence, located on SW King James Place. He lived there with his parents. Katelynn pulled up in front of the house and James took the infant into the house. James’ 8-year-old son was already in the home. James left the house and a short time later shot and killed Katelynn. The children were not harmed and did not witness the shooting.

We will not have any further details on the officer involved-shooting until the interviews of all the involved officers have been completed. Those interviews will not be fully completed this week.
