SRINAGAR, India (AP) — Hindus in Indian-controlled Kashmir have staged protests a day after assailants fatally shot a Hindu government employee in the disputed Muslim-majority region. Police blamed anti-India rebels for the killing of the man inside an office complex. Scores of minority Hindus, also known as Pandits, took to the streets in at least three places and blocked roads to demand that the man’s killers be brought to justice. They blamed India’s governing Hindu nationalist party for inaction. Muslim rebel attacks in the 1990s led to the departure of most Hindus from Kashmir. But many have since returned as part of a government resettlement plan that provides them with jobs and housing, triggering tensions with the Muslim population.
