Chanting students disrupt U of O president’s speech

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A chanting group of students disrupted a speech by the University of Oregon president.
 
The students stormed the stage Friday morning as President Michael Schill was to give his annual State of the University speech.
 
Schill was set to announce a $50 million gift from an anonymous donor, who will give the money over the next five years without asking it go to a specific program.
 
The Eugene Register-Guard reports ( http://bit.ly/2yNQg1w ) the students — some holding signs, including one that said “take back our campus” — protested Schill’s leadership, including the treatment of minority students and tuition increases.
 
The newspaper reports ( http://bit.ly/2xXvMa7 ) the donation comes with an unusual feature – the anonymous donors have not earmarked the money, provided over the next five years, for any specific program or initiative.
 
The money will be used exclusively for “strategic investments,” however, not for ongoing university operating costs.
