Fire destroys SE Bend detached shop-garage

KTVZ

A fire destroyed a detached garage-shop in southeast Bend Friday afternoon, but firefighters kept it from reaching a nearby home, officials said.

The Bend Fire Department responded around 1:30 p.m. to the reported fire in the 61000 block of News Lane, near its intersection with Brosterhous Road, Fire Inspector Steve Stenkamp said.

The first units to arrive found a detached garage-shop fully ablaze and flames approaching the nearby home that they were able to stop, he said.

Bend police provided traffic control, closing Brosterhous Road for a time.

The garage-shop was a total loss, with $20,000 in losses to the structure and $80,000 worth of contents, which was business equipment for the resident.

The fire began at or near a wood stove, Stenkamp said, but the exact cause was undetermined.

The fire inspector said Bend Fire wants to remind residents to have your wood stove checked and cleaned on a yearly basis.
