Sandy man, 71, killed in wrong-way Hwy. 26 crash
A 71-year-old Sandy man was killed early Friday when his car, heading the wrong way on Highway 26 in Sandy, collided nearly head-on with a fuel tanker truck, Oregon State Police reported.
Troopers and other emergency personnel responded around 4:45 a.m. to the two-vehicle crash on the highway near milepost 26.
OSP said the man was at the wheel of a 1997 Jaguar coupe heading west in the eastbound lanes of the five-lane highway when it collided with an eastbound commercial tanker truck towing two fuel trailers.
The Jaguar’s driver, whose name has not been disclosed, was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver, a 49-year-old Fairview man, was unhurt, troopers said..
The eastbound lanes of Highway 26 were closed most of the morning, with a detour in place.
