Facebook’s Prineville Data Center announces community grants
Facebook’s Prineville Data Center announced Wednesday its 2018 Local Community Action Grants.
A total of 20 Crook County nonprofits and schools were awarded a total of $204,900 to support short-term, high-impact projects that address critical community needs within the county by putting the power of technology to use for community benefit, connecting people online or off, improving education and promoting local economic development.
Since 2011, Facebook has donated almost $1,470,000 to Crook County schools and qualified nonprofits through its Community Action Grants program and local donations, including the support of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education.
A letter has been sent to recipients with details, including an invitation for them to attend a reception and tour of the newly opened Building 3 at the data center on Friday, February 16.
“Many thanks to everyone who applied!” the announcement said.
Here’s a list of the 2018 Facebook Prineville Data Center Local Community Action Grant Recipients:
Barnes Butte Elementary School – $20,000 Funding for school-wide Scottish Storyline curriculum training and to aid in the construction of educational kiosks and trail signage at the Barnes Butte property.
Central Oregon Council on Aging – $4,160 Funding to establish an information and resource program in Prineville.
Central Oregon Trail Alliance (COTA) – $45,000 Funding to help construct and upgrade the Lower 66 trail system in Prineville, creating an easy three-mile trail accessible to strollers, walkers, cyclists and more. The trail will include park benches and picnic tables.
Central Oregon Youth Development Inc. – $4,850 Funding to help create an integrated, secure Virtual IT system to support its After the Bell and The Landing programs, projects under development, and to expand program capacity.
Crook County High School Computer Science/Technology Department – $23,000 Funding for computer components so Introduction to Computer Science students can disassemble and rebuild outdated computers.
Crook County High School Robotics Club – $1,000 Funding for robot storage unit.
Crook County Middle School – $5,720 Funding to help upgrade the gymnasium sound system.
Crook County School District – $3,600 Funding for two Sphero Robotic Power Packs, which will provide digital STEAM content for district-wide use.
Crook County School District – $12,360 Funding for 40 iPads for Crooked River Elementary School and Barnes Butte Elementary School Kindergarten class use.
Crook County School District – $10,000 Funding for Wi-Fi on three district buses so that rural students with 90-minute bus rides can do schoolwork while commuting.
Crook County Veterans Services – $5,000 Funding to help create a computer lab that is available to all veterans.
Family Access Network (FAN) – $5,000 Funding to help establish a FAN advocacy program at Crook County High School.
Friends of Powell Butte School – $8,328 Funding for a new school kitchen stove.
High Desert Museum – $5,000
Funding to support Kids Curate, a year-long STEAM education program that creates engaging experiences for underserved students.
Humane Society of the Ochocos – $19,900 Funding towards the design plans by Shelter Planners of America for a new shelter.
Junior Achievement of Central Oregon – $10,000 Funding for Junior Achievement in-class programs to an expanding number of middle and high school classes over the next two school years.
MountainStar Relief Nursery – $5,030 Funding towards the purchase of a play structure and two computers.
Oregon Mayors Association – $2,500 Funding towards the “If I Were Mayor” contest, which includes elementary, middle and high school students.
Powell Butte Community Charter School – $5,722 Funding to purchase materials and support instruction for 40 sessions of after-school coding classes, open to students in Grades 2-8.
Rimrock Trails Adolescent Treatment Services – $8,700 Funding for four computers and four laptops for student and staff use.
