Boy, 4, dies after falling into frozen Maupin pond

A 4-year-old boy fell through the ice of a frozen pond in Maupin on Monday and later died at a Bend hospital, Wasco County sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputies were dispatched to the 91400 block of Hinton Road on the report of a possible child drowning, officials said in a news release Wednesday.

A deputy arrived within six minutes of the call and was able to find and pull the boy from the middle of a frozen-over pond, immediately starting CPR, deputies said.

The boy was flown by Life Flight helicopter to St. Charles Bend, where life-saving efforts continued, but he died that evening.

“There are no indications of foul play and this appears to be a tragic accident,” the sheriff’s office news release stated.

The boy’s name was being withheld pending notification of extended family.
