Driver charged in Hwy. 20 DUII crash east of Bend
An alleged drunk driver ran a stop sign east of Bend and struck a car on Highway 20 at Ward Road Thursday night, sending one driver to jail and the other to the hospital, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said.
Deputies responded shortly before 10 p.m. to the reported injury crash at the intersection of Highway 20 East and Ward Road, Sgt. Kevin Dizney said.
An investigation determined that a northbound Ford F-150 pickup driven by Rosa Gastiaburu, 57, of Bend, failed to stop at a stop sign and entered the intersection, hitting the passenger side of an eastbound VW Passat driven by Taylor Rupel, 27, also of Bend, Dizney said.
Both vehicles came to rest off the highway shoulder northest of the intersection. Rupel ws taken by ambulance to St. Charles Bend with non-life-threatening injuries, Dizney said. No injuries were reported to Gastiaburu or her passenger, a Texas man who is her father and the pickup’s owner.
Dizney said deputies determined Gastiaburu ws under the influence of alcohol. She was arrested and taken to the Deschutes County Jail on charges of DUII-alcohol, reckless driving and two counts each of third-degree assault and recklessly endangering another person. A jail official said she was released to a responsible third party early Friday, about two hours after arriving at the jail.
Deputies were assisted on the scene by Oregon State Police, the Bend Fire Department and ODOT.
