BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- A new course focused on how mindfulness can help people navigate challenging times is being offered to students and the public at Oregon State University–Cascades this fall.

Students and community members can learn about theories of mindful practices and develop personal insight into their responses to life events.

Topics include healthy and unhealthy coping mechanisms, how personal or family narratives limit thinking, relationship challenges, and implicit bias, including social justice implications.

The course, “Cultivating Resilience in Challenging Times,” which began Sept. 23, is led by Lura Reed, a human development and family sciences instructor with a background in clinical psychology.

“Mindfulness can help us be more present, no matter the challenge or opportunity in front of us,” said Reed. “It allows us to observe our circumstances objectively, manage our emotional response and stay open to problem-solving and relationships, and even joy.”

The 10-week course is offered virtually for both students and community members through Dec. 11, the end of fall term. The course meets live Wednesdays from 6 to 6:50 p.m. and community members can also view recorded versions of each class and complete practical at-home assignments.

The fee is $75 for the non-credit course and the registration deadline is Oct. 14. For information and to register visit osucascades.edu/cultivating-resilience or contact events@osucascades.edu.
