Mt. Bachelor Gets Pre-Holiday Snow Dump
If you thought you missed all the powder for the season, think again. Just in time for Mt. Bachelor’s closing weekend, a dumping of fresh snow.
“I wasn’t quite expecting this much snow, so how could you pass it up,” said Pratt Rather a downhill skier from Bend up at the mountain Friday.
“We were hoping there would be some snow left — and well, there’s some snow left,” said Sean Halsted, a cross-country skier in town for some spring ski training.
He?s one of many competitive cross-country racers that came West because of the area’s reputation for good spring skiing.
“The Bend area is known for having beautiful ski conditions late into the year,” said Seth Hubbard, a cross-country skier from Maine. “Adds to the experience — it’s the atmosphere. It will make it a little more work today.”
Perhaps if you’ve been around a few years, all this fresh snow is not surprising.
“Last year I was shoveling, in June, into June. So this is not unusual,” said Sue Foster, manager of the Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center.
Enjoy the snow while you can. NewsChannel 21 Chief Meteorologist Bob Shaw says the timing was perfect for Bachelor’s closing weekend, but summer is just around the corner.
“Winter on Memorial Day — what else can you say?” said Rather.
Besides a fresh pile of snow, Mt. Bachelor is celebrating the end of the season with the second annual Brewski. From noon to 3 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, you can sample craft brews up on the mountain.
